But having the home of the Royal Navy within the Dockyard has created a constant battle of cat and mouse between smugglers and pirates and the Excise Men and the Royal Naval officers. It is 1813. England is at war. And in the narrow alleyways of Spice Island — the beating heart of Georgian Portsmouth — a seedy underworld thrives in the shadow of Nelson's fleet.
On this up to 90-minute immersive evening walk, professional actors bring the dark streets of Old Portsmouth back to life. You'll move through the same smuggler routes that ran illicit cargo beneath the noses of the Royal Navy, hear true stories of murder and disappearance, and find yourself drawn into the world of rival gangs, ale houses and the infamous "cat" houses that once lined Broad Street.
This isn't a guided walk with a lantern. It's a piece of living theatre — set in one of England's most historically haunted harbour cities, staged in the streets where it actually happened.
